Driver Responsibility Fees

For certain offenses under the Michigan Motor Vehicle Code, The Secretary of State assesses a hefty “driver responsibility fee.” For an operating while intoxicated offense, it is $2,000. For an operating while impaired, it is $1,000. These fees are on top of other license sanctions as well as the hefty fines and costs, legal fees, probation, possible confinement, possible vehicle forfeiture, and more from the court.

Paying these fees can be difficult for many. If not paid, the result is one either does not drive or one choses to drive illegally. Then, if one gets caught driving illegally, the fines, costs and charges begin to snowball making the situation worse.

Starting in December 2014, individuals ordered to pay such fees may chose to perform community service in the alternative.
