Alimony: What is it?

Alimony (also known as spousal support) can be raised in any divorce proceeding. In fact, many of the divorces that I handle involve one of the parties requesting spousal support.

The court considers a number of factors when determining if spousal support should be offered, including the earnings of the individuals. A large disparity in the earnings histories between husband and wife can increase the chances that one will receive spousal support.

Another common scenario in which a person may be awarded spousal support is when one spouse serves as the primary earner and the other cares for the home and the children. However, spousal support is not limited to these two situations. It may also be awarded in cases where both spouses work outside the home, depending on several factors.
